Complex Post-Traumatic Stress

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a type of PTSD that happens when someone goes through long-term or repeated trauma, rather than just a single traumatic event. It’s often linked to things like ongoing abuse, neglect, or living in an unsafe or violent environment for a long time.

Reliving the Trauma

Similar to regular PTSD, people with C-PTSD can experience flashbacks, nightmares, or distressing memories of the trauma, but these might happen more often because the trauma was prolonged. Stress from the trauma can show up physically too, like headaches, chronic pain, or trouble sleeping.

Emotional Struggles

Folks with C-PTSD often have trouble controlling their emotions. They might feel intense sadness, anger, or anxiety, and sometimes might have outbursts or feel emotionally numb. Sometimes people with C-PTSD feel disconnected from themselves or like they’re outside their own body. This can include “spacing out” or having trouble remembering things.

Negative Self-View

A big part of C-PTSD is feeling bad about yourself. People may struggle with feelings of shame or think they’re broken, unworthy of love, or that they’re “damaged.” Due to the trauma, trust can be really hard, and forming healthy relationships may feel tough. There might be fears of abandonment, or the person may distance themselves from others to stay safe emotionally.
